People in Great Britian celebrate Guy Fawkes Day on November 5th. This day is also called Bonfire Night or Fireworks Night. On November 5th 1605, a group of Catholics wanted to kill the King, James 1. They wanted to blow up the Houses of Parliament while the King was there. So they put kegs of gunpowder in a cellar under the Houses of Parliament. One of the conspirators was Guy Fawkes. It is said that somebody warned the King about the plot. The king´s guards searched the Parliament and found the gunpowder. They also arrested Guy Fawkes, with others, and took them to the prison in the Tower of London. The conspirators were executed.
It is a custom in Britian to remember the plot on November 5th. Children make guys, effigies of Fawkes, from old clothes and burn them on a bonfire. There are public firework displays in towns. Some people hold small bonfire parties in their gardens. Some children show their guys in the streets and collect money for fireworks.
